Arson Awareness Week
Held May 1-7, 2011

Every third fire reported in this state is an arson or suspicious fire.  In 2010, arson blazes cost Michigan residents over $400 million.  These loss figures do not include indirect costs such as medical care, funeral expenses, temporary shelter, business interruption, demolition, fire investigation, prosecution, court proceedings and incarceration.  Arson also has a significant impact on what Michigan residents pay for insurance.

To focus on this crime, May 1-7 was designated as Arson Awareness Week in Michigan.  Sponsored by the MAPC, the week-long observance includes a public awareness campaign about the devastation caused by arson and the awarding of the poster contest winners.

Last year, the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee announced that it was awarding a grant to the Wayne County Prosecutor's office to fight arson-for-profit.  Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, along with members of the MAPC and National Insurance Crime Bureau, held a news conference to announce the grant that will fund an assistant prosecutor position to pursue arson-for-profit cases in Wayne County.
